Diabetes & Blood Sugar Level Monitoring

Blood Sugar Monitoring
Managing your blood sugar is the most important thing you can do to feel your best and prevent long-term complications of diabetes. By monitoring your blood sugar and keeping it within your target range, you'll reduce such risks as eye, kidney, blood vessel and nerve damage.

The Dauphin Clinic Pharmacy offers free monitoring of blood sugar to our customers. This test shows how much glucose is present in the blood at different times of day, so you can adjust insulin or food accordingly. In recent guidelines, the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) suggests that all people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes should self-monitor blood glucose levels. The CDA also recommends self-monitoring for most people using medications to control type 2 diabetes, and even for those who are managing their type 2 diabetes through diet and exercise alone.

A blood glucose meter is used to test blood glucose at home and determine whether blood glucose levels are in the target range. Testing glucose levels helps put the person with diabetes in control and be more active in managing their condition. Using meters to determine the effects of certain foods on blood glucose levels can also help a person with diabetes choose an appropriate diet.

A person with diabetes should talk with one of our pharmacists about which model of glucose meter is appropriate for them. Anyone using a glucose meter should receive proper training so that they can test their blood glucose levels properly. Questions to ask our pharmacists include: the size of the drop of blood needed, the type of blood glucose strips to use, how to check if the meter is accurate (the meter should be checked at least once a year), how to code the meter, and how to clean the meter and when to test.

Insulin
Insulin is one of many hormones that helps the body turn the food we eat into energy. It also helps us store energy that we can use later. The Dauphin Clinic Pharmacy offers modern lightweight, disposable, plastic syringes with microfine needles. These syringes are smaller, have finer needles and have special coatings on the needles so injecting is as painless as possible.

Other services
- Predrawn insulin syringes
- Insulin pens and training available
